Potassium makes up about 1.5% of the weight of the Earth’s crust and is the seventh most abundant element in it. As it is very electropositive, potassium metal is difficult to obtain from its minerals. It is never found free in nature. Potassium is one of the most important minerals and is essential for the very life of every cell.

Potassium is found principally in the intracellular fluid. A small amount of potassium in the extracellular fluid is necessary for normal muscular activity. Potassium is important as an alkalinizing agent. It maintains a proper acid-alkaline balance in the blood and tissues. It prevents hyperacidity. It is therefore of crucial importance in maintaining alkalinity in the body so that cancer cells do not have a chance of manifesting as a disease in the body. This mineral is essential for muscle contraction and is, therefore, important for the proper functioning of the heart, especially for maintaining a normal heartbeat. Heart conditions could be hugely controlled with increased usage of this mineral. It also promotes the secretion of hormones and helps the kidneys in detoxification of blood.

Potassium prevents female hormonal disorders by stimulating the hormone production. It is involved in the proper functioning of the nervous system and helps to overcome fatigue. It also assists in reducing blood pressure. It aids in clear thinking by sending oxygen to the brain, and preserves proper alkalinity of body fluids. Our arms and legs, for example, need potassium for the muscles to move.

The kidney is the main organ that controls the balance of potassium. It removes excess potassium into the urine. Potassium deficiency causes undue body tiredness, palpitations of the heart, cloudiness of the mind, nervous tremors, excessive perspiration of the hands and feet, and great sensitivity of the nerves to cold. It may also result in slow healing of ulcers and fractures.

It is always best to supplement with a healthy diet containing the good nutrients needed for such. Foods that contain potassium include: avocados, baked potato, potato peal broth, bananas, beans, broccoli, cantaloupes, collard greens, dates, honeydew melon, kelp, milk, nectarines, prunes, tomatoes, spinach, and winter squash. If not supplementation is required; keeping in mind that a healthy balance of Calcium and Magnesium is also needed to get the full benefit out of these supplements.
