Recent research highlights a troubling reason behind the rising ADHD diagnoses in the U.S.
A study in The Journal of Pediatrics found that children who are younger than their classmates—often just a few months behind—are up to twice as likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. Many of these children are prescribed medication simply because they are fidgety or have trouble sitting still in class.
Normal Behaviour Mislabelled as ADHD
Brain development in early childhood varies widely. A single year can make a huge difference in behaviour. Younger students’ natural restlessness, distraction, and high energy are often compared to older classmates, and these normal behaviours are mistakenly labelled as ADHD.
Shockingly, the child’s age is rarely considered when ADHD medications are prescribed. Many kids are simply too young to sit still in a classroom setting—they just need time to mature.
ADHD Drugs: Big Pharma’s Cash Cow
The American Psychiatric Association’s ADHD guidelines make it easy to diagnose, and the organisation receives 20–30% of its funding from pharmaceutical companies.
ADHD medications generate over $13 billion a year in the U.S., with about 11% of American children diagnosed. Yet studies show no long-term benefit from these drugs.
The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia tracked 178 children with ADHD and 212 without. After three years, medicated and non-medicated children were at the same stage of development by age 10.
“Medication doesn’t alter the long-term outcomes of kids,” said Dr. Daryl Efron, lead author.
There is also evidence that amphetamine-based ADHD medications may cause brain damage—yet profit motives keep them widely prescribed. ADHD drug sales are projected to reach $17.5 billion in the U.S. by 2020.
Marketing tactics are especially concerning. For example, Shire, maker of Adderall, distributed 50,000 superhero comic books promoting the idea that “medicine may make it easier to pay attention and control your behaviour.”
The Bottom Line
Many children diagnosed with ADHD are simply younger and more naturally active than their peers. Rather than rushing to medication, a mindful approach considering age, nutrition, lifestyle, and emotional wellbeing is essential.
