Vagus Nerve

“Vagus” is Latin for “wandering.”

Your Vagus nerve is your longest nerve, connecting your Brain with almost every organ in the body. It originates in the lower two-thirds of your Brain stem. Going on to split into two branches. It then wraps around each side of your upper neck just behind your ears on the mastoid bone. The Vagus nerve then travels across the chest and down into your abdomen. It then connects to your brain with your other organs:

  • larynx, pharynx,
  • tongue,
  • ears,
  • lungs,
  • gut,
  • heart,
  • liver,
  • spleen,
  • gallbladder,
  • kidney,
  • pancreas,
  • intestines,
  • and reproductive organs.

The Vagus nerve connects to other nerves. It enables it to tune in to other people’s voices, eye contact, facial expressions and speech.

How does the Vagus communicate with the rest of the body

Your Vagus nerve’s tendrils, made primarily of sensory fibres, allows it to serve as a two-way messenger. It passes chemical signals using highly defined micro-organisms. Orchestrating messages between the organs and the brain to keep your body healthy. For example, this two- way communication allows your brain to direct the functions of your heart. It also communicates with major blood vessels, airways, lungs, oesophagus, stomach, and intestines. In turn, it returns important information to the brain. When your Vagus nerve is working optimally, you are more likely to recover more quickly after stress, injury, or illness.

The vagus nerve operates as a fibre-optic cable or a walkie-talkie that sends instructions between your body and your brain. This important channel for communication between the brain and body, known as the mind-body connection, plays a critical role in your ability to reduce inflammation and maintain a state of balance and health called homeostasis.

Your Vagus nerve is therefore your primary channel of communication between your brain and your body. Like a highway, your Vagus nerve connects your brain with your Gut, Heart, Immune system, and all of your other major organs. It sends messages in both directions. Your Vagus nerve assesses what the body needs, then directs your Brain to release the appropriate chemical messengers, like hormones and neurotransmitters.  They regulate and control all of the unconscious processes in your body. It includes your heart rate, digestion, appetite, mood, pain threshold, sleep, memory, cognitive function, and your Immune response.

It would be an understatement to say that the Vagus nerve is crucial in proper communication with signals within your body to maintain a state of balance. You may experience feelings of pain, fatigue, brain fog, stress, anxiety, or depression, as well as a number of neurological and even autoimmune issues.

How to Support Vagus Health

It is ignorant to think a modern day pill will be enough to repair and sort it out. So too, since the body is orchestrated by this Vagus nerve, too think by merely spending time bringing various organs in the body into alignment.by detoxing and supplying essential nutrition to support optimal balance and functioning, is going to do the trick. Of course, it helps in the bigger equation but more importantly it is important to assist the internal balance through supporting the miniscule messengers in the system – our own healthy micro-organisms.

Since all these originate from within the gut it is good enough to assume that supporting optimal gut health remains key to the process. Not just a healthy functioning gut from a cleanse prospective, as arranged in order of importance for the gut and liver, but a healthy gut from a support perspective supporting good healthy bacteria to do the messaging as found in the Imsyser 12 strain “live”  liquid Probiotic:
