A dangerous form of bacteria with the disturbing name Fusobacterium nucleatum is a disease enabler. It helps powerful pathogens enter your bloodstream and may lead to serious illness. But you can take a simple precaution every night to fight against its evil effects. What you need to do is floss your teeth regularly. Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) lives on your teeth and gums. It not only helps germs attack gums and teeth, it facilitates infections that can spread throughout your body. One of the most common diseases of the gums is gingivitis. A main factor in gingivitis is the formation of plaque, a development that is worsened by F. nucleatum. F. nucleatum can double your chances of gingivitis. Other diseases caused by or enabled by the bacteria include periodontitis and oral abscesses. According to Yiping W. Han, a professor of periodontics at Case Western Reserve University, in pregnant women, F. nucleatum can enter the bloodstream and cause pregnancy complications like miscarriage, preterm birth and stillbirth. The bacteria multiply in amniotic fluid, stimulating damaging inflammation in the fetus. F. nucleatum is also found in lung, liver, spleen, blood, abdominal, and obstetrical and gynecological abscesses and infections. Han says: “(F. nucleatum ) attachment is the very first step…. and Fusobacterium adhesion A (FadA) was found to be involved in binding.” Binding establishes an infection in the mouth and the body. During an infection in the mouth, the bacteria can increase in number as much as 10,000 times. Han warns that the best tool available right now to fight F. nucleatum is to “brush, floss, and see a dentist.”
