Tapeworms (Taenia species) can live inside a human’s intestines for decades, sometimes growing up to 30 feet long! These parasites typically enter the body through undercooked or contaminated meat. Once inside, they attach to the intestinal walls and absorb nutrients from the host’s digested food.
Intestinal parasites and there are over 300 known for human invasion, such as Giardia or Entamoeba histolytica, which can impair the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients, leading to deficiencies that affect metabolic function.
Surprisingly, many people infected with tapeworms may experience few or no symptoms, allowing the parasite to thrive unnoticed for years.
They remain however undesirable residents.
Parasites can be a root cause of various metabolic health conditions by disrupting nutrient absorption, altering gut microbiota, and triggering chronic inflammation.
Some parasites also influence the immune system, creating chronic inflammation that can contribute to insulin resistance, weight gain, and other metabolic disorders.
Additionally, parasitic infections may alter gut microbiota balance, affecting digestion and metabolism, potentially increasing the risk of conditions like obesity and diabetes.
Certain parasites and their metabolites can even cross the blood-brain barrier, leading to neurological damage and conditions like encephalitis, seizures, or cognitive impairments or mere foggy states.
For example, Toxoplasma gondii can invade the brain and form cysts, potentially affecting behavior and mental health. Similarly, neurocysticercosis, caused by the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium), occurs when larvae migrate to the brain, causing seizures or other neurological issues. This ability to breach the blood-brain barrier makes some parasitic infections particularly dangerous.
