Dr Arien van der Merwe is a medical doctor with more than 30 years’ experience. She is the author of various books on health and wellbeing, a frequent contributor to high profile magazines, and a regular guest on TV and radio. We all know that getting too much added sugar carries many health risks—from weight gain and heart disease to diabetes and obesity-linked cancers. In fact, research shows that most Americans are getting so much sugar in their daily diets that they are increasing their heart attack risk by 20%.
If you’re not cutting calories and eat a healthful diet, it’s OK to have up to two to three teaspoons of these sugars daily. But if your diet includes high-sugar snacks, cereals, drinks or other processed foods, limit these sugars to a few times a week.
•Brown and white sugars.
You may think of brown sugar as a more wholesome choice than white sugar. But the fact is, they’re both processed—white sugar is derived from sugarcane or sugar beets, while brown sugar is a combination of white sugar and molasses. These sugars also have roughly the same number of calories—16 calories per teaspoon for white sugar…and 17 for brown sugar.
Brown sugar is really no more healthful than white sugar, but it does make baked goods moister and adds a hint of caramel flavour.
Aside from pure water, green tea is arguably one of the healthiest beverages around, with research pointing to impressive health benefits for your heart, bones, weight, vision, and even your brain.
Green Tea Boosts Brain Health
“Our findings provide first evidence for the putative beneficial effect of green tea on cognitive functioning, in particular, on working memory processing at the neural system level by suggesting changes in short-term plasticity of parieto-frontal brain connections.
Modeling effective connectivity among frontal and parietal brain regions during working memory processing might help to assess the efficacy of green tea for the treatment of cognitive impairments in psychiatric disorders such as dementia.”
What makes IMSYSER’S Probiotics better than any other?
Probiotics has become such a misused name with most manufacturers, dumping billions of a few (if you’re lucky) strains of the human probiotics in a tablet form. On average 9 strain is your highest at pharmacy level. IMSYSER HAS 12 STRAIN of the various good bacteria needed for the human gut. (A liquid cocktail of digestive enzymes, prebiotics and probiotics).
Recent studies have shown that weight loss can be enhanced by taking calcium. Apparently calcium inhibits the creation of fat, promoting the breakdown and burning of fat. Dietary calcium also prevents regaining the weight that was lost. Calcium taken as supplements did not show such a powerful weight loss effect. (In fact, raw food expert David Wolfe warns against taking calcium supplements, which tend to have nano-organisms that harden or calcify our bodies in an unhealthy manner).
Apples are the top choice of fruits for diet gurus like Nicholas Perricone, MD, Dr. Simeon and Eric Berg, DC. Apples have five grams of fiber, both soluble and insoluble kinds. The soluble fiber, known as pectin, can decrease the appetite for up to four hours. Even though apples are sweet, they stabilize the blood sugar. This is due not only to their fiber content, but also phloreitin, a flavonoid-type, blood-sugar-stabilizing phytonutrient found exclusively in apples. Apples also contain anti-inflammatory and anticancer phytonutrients. Finally, apples are high in potassium, which helps rid the body of water-retaining sodium.
Another huge factor in creating obesity is the increase in endocrine disruptors (chemicals that mimic, block or otherwise disrupt the normal function of hormones). These include pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, soy products, and growth hormone in the animals and plants we eat. Farmers put hormones in the animals to fatten them up and consequently, the people eating the animals get fattened by the hormones as well. (This is also why girls develop sexually at an earlier age, and why boys develop breast tissue.) Eating organic food will help minimize exposure to these.
I know it’s shocking, but the truth is that many restaurants use processed commercial eggs (from a carton) that contain “obesity additives” such as artificial ingredients, chemicals, preservatives, and even gluten-like fillers and compounds. That’s BAD news for anyone trying to lose flab fast, as these ingredients can slow down your weight loss efforts and increase your body’s toxicity levels.
