All medicines had natural plant beginnings

All medicines had natural plant beginnings. Natural products of medicinal value obtained from plants, animals, microorganisms and minerals. Plants serve as an important source of modern medicines. To mention but a few memorable additions:

  1. Quinine – used to treat malaria – was isolated from bark of a tree called Cinchona.
  2. Atropine – used as eye drop to dilate pupils – also used in organophosphate poisoning – was isolated from Atropa belladonna.
  3. Artemesinin – used for malaria – was obtained from Artemesia annua
  4. Morphine – is used as a powerful pain killer used in cancer patients – and is obtained from leaves of opium poppy, called Papaver Somniferum Some of these isolated purified compounds have also been modified to form new drugs to mention but another few:
  5. Morphine – modified to another pain killer called Pethidine
  6. Theophylline – used in asthma is obtained from Tea /coffee/cocoa – and has been modified to form another common antiasthma drug Aminophylline by treating it with Ethylene diamine.
  7. salicin – a pain killer from Salix species was modified to Aspirin Some of the isolated compounds are used as template molecules for synthesis of new drugs to mention of course a few:
  8. Morphine – used as template molecule for synthesis of dextromethopthan used to suppress dry coughs.
  9. Galegine – from Galega officinale used as template molecule for synthesis of Metformin, a common medicine for diabetes.
  10. Papaverine – used as template molecule for synthesis of Verapamil.
  11. Ergotamine – used for treatment of migraine headaches obtained from Claviceps purpurea used as template molecule for synthesis of Bromocryptine used to treat Parkinson’s disease, stopping lactation and treat certain cancers Some other drugs synthesized based on mechanism of action of above molecules: – Based on how Aspirin works on Cox enzyme, we have several pain killers classified as NSAIDs developed and are available on the market. It is therefore important to note the importance of plants and exploit their medicinal potential.
