Our modern Western diet makes the body more acidic. A more acidic body can lead to chronic metabolic syndrome, which opens the door to diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Cancer cells themselves create small acidic micro-environments, which help them spread rapidly from their original site.

Understanding Acidity

The body regulates acidity within a very narrow range. Normal blood pH ranges from 7.35 to 7.45, slightly alkaline. A pH below 7.0 is acidic, while above 7.0 is alkaline. Extreme acidosis or alkalosis can make people critically ill, requiring medical support such as dialysis or even life support.

Foods play a crucial role in acidity: plant-based foods help reduce acidity, while many meat and protein-based foods increase it. Vegetarians typically have less acidic urine than meat-eaters. Interestingly, some acidic foods, like lemons, actually help alkalize the body.

Drinking enough good-quality water is essential, but pairing it with organic lemon juice or whole fruit juice enhances alkalinity. You can track your progress with pH strips or a pH meter.

Acidic Foods to Limit

  • Meat & Protein: Beef, chicken, pork, lamb, fish, eggs, cheese, shellfish, peanut butter, peanuts
  • Fats: Bacon, certain nuts (Brazil nuts, filberts, walnuts)
  • Starches: Bread, cereal, crackers, pasta, noodles
  • Vegetables: Corn, lentils
  • Fruits: Cranberries, plums, prunes
  • Sweets: Cakes, cookies, all refined sugars

Alkalizing Foods to Include

  • Milk & Dairy: Milk, cream, buttermilk
  • Healthy Fats: Almonds, chestnuts, coconut (rich in Omega-3)
  • Vegetables: Beets, beet greens, Swiss chard, dandelion greens, kale, mustard greens, spinach, turnip greens
  • Fruits: Most fruits (except cranberries, plums, prunes)
  • Sweets: Molasses, small amounts of honey

Tips for Maintaining Alkalinity

  • A flat teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda on an empty stomach in the morning
  • A tablespoon of organic apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach
  • Lemon water throughout the day, ideally a glass every hour
  • Make conscious food choices: “you are what you eat
  • Habits take time—about 21 days to form and another 21 to consolidate
